Construction on Geraldton tourism jetty to begin in June, completion expected for October

It has been revealed construction on a commercial tourism jetty for Geraldton will begin next month, with the project expected to be completed around October. Speaking in a Budget Estimates session in State Parliament on Wednesday, Mid West Ports Authority CEO Damian Tully stated construction on the Eastern Breakwater Tourism Jetty will start in June. “There was a commitment from Government to help activate the Abrolhos Islands and we will see construction on a jetty at the Eastern Breakwater begin in June this year,” Mr Tully said. In 2020 the State Government announced a $3 million investment to build two jetties in Geraldton. In February this year it was announced tender had been awarded to Australian company SMC Marine to build a jetty for tourism operators on the esplanade east of the Port of Geraldton. Mr Tully confirmed this jetty won’t be accessible to the public. “The Eastern Breakwater Jetty will be a commercial jetty to help activate the Abrolhos Islands as a tourism prospect,” Mr Tully said. “At this stage, we are planning to limit it to commercial operators.” A second jetty is in the design phase, with construction expected to begin in 2023/24, according to the Government.
