Locals will soon have another incentive to walk or cycle around the city, with works under way on the first stage of Geraldton’s cycling network expansion project.

The Glenfield Beach Drive shared path will run between Hillview Drive and Chapman Road, with construction to cost $220,000. The path will be 360m long and 3m wide, forming part of the more than 8km of shared paths for cycling and walking planned for Geraldton.

The State Government has allocated $4.24 million to the project, which will also see the construction of a 3.5km Chapman Road shared path in the 2022-23 financial year.

More than $2m will go towards a 4.5km shared path to be developed on Brand Highway from Tarcoola Beach to Cape Burney.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the gradual expansion of Geraldton’s cycling network would support local jobs and encourage people to rethink jumping in the car to get around every day.

“For more than a decade the community has been asking for an off-road shared path so they can safely ride, walk or scoot from Cape Burney in the south to Drummond Cove in the north,” she said.

Member for Geraldton Lara Dalton said constituents often spoke to her about the need for the cycleway expansion in the city.

“Community members often talk to me about how much they are looking forward to safe and accessible paths as it will provide them and their family with an alternative form of transport for work and recreation purposes,” she said.
