Darryll George Phillip Morrison: Bail granted to Coorow man accused of pub glassing, wielding samurai sword

A Mid West man is accused of smashing a pint glass over another man’s head during a pub fight before coming back armed with a samurai sword — forcing bar patrons to barricade themselves inside. Darryll George Phillip Morrison, a 20-year-old from Coorow, was granted bail after appearing in Geraldton Magistrates Court on Tuesday on eight charges, including four counts of criminal damage and one count each of unlawful wounding, being armed, possessing prohibited drugs and drug paraphernalia. Police prosecutor Sgt Paul Burkinshaw told the court on Tuesday the alleged incident occurred just a day prior on July 31 at the Coorow Hotel. Sgt Burkinshaw said the alleged victim and accused were not known to each other, but an argument escalated to the point in which Mr Morrison allegedly smashed a pint glass over the other man’s head while he was standing 1-2 metres away from him. The alleged victim suffered 10 cuts to his head and a 3cm laceration to the right eyebrow, and he was taken to the hospital by ambulance. After the alleged glassing incident, police say Mr Morrison smashed the windows of the hotel before he left the area, only to return armed with a 70cm long samurai sword. He was allegedly screaming at the 20 patrons inside the hotel, who had to barricade themselves in when he was trying to enter before police arrived and arrested him. Defence lawyer Veronica Randall told the court Mr Morrison had no record and was willing to follow bail conditions put in place. Magistrate Angus Hockton said while he did not believe alcohol was a problem for Mr Morrison, it could potentially become one. Mr Morrison was granted bail under conditions not to drink alcohol and obey a curfew. He will reappear in court on August 31.
