Denison to host interzone round robin as Batavia League form bulk of Northern Zone squad
The best country bowlers from around the State will face off on the greens of the Denison Bowling Club when they host the Men’s Interzone Round Robin Fours over the weekend.
The tournament will see all four zones — northern, eastern, southern and south west — compete to see who is the best in the State.
Teams were selected based on the recently completed Inter League tournaments, with Batavia League players forming the bulk of the northern squad after Batavia Red took out the northern competition over Central West Coast.
Eight players from the Batavia League will be in action, with Geraldton Bowling Club supplying the most with six.
Geraldton Blue’s Shane (Danger) Giudice-Nairn and Jon Trotter, Geraldton Red’s Bradley King and Warwick Glenister and Gold’s Michael Walton and Michael Ford have all been named in the side.
All six competed in last year’s tournament and bring a wealth of experience.
Ian Carlshausen will be crucial playing at his home club, while Mark Adams from Wonthella Maroon also has Inter Zone experience.
Northern zone will be hoping to improve on last year’s performance when they finished last, equal on points with the south west and southern zones but with fewer rink wins.
Eastern zone are the defending champions after picking up wins on all three rounds of the competition to romp home to victory and will be dangerous once again, with nine players returning from last year’s squad.
This includes four skips in Peter Fleay, Chris Schell, Ashley Sharp and Matthew France.
Southern zone has eight players returning from last year, while south west has just six.
The event will also serve as a selection process for the country all-stars side to compete against a Bowls WA metropolitan side ahead of the country week carnival.
More than 1000 bowls will be rolled down over the three-round tournament.
You can catch the first two rounds live on Streamer at streamer.com.au from 9am Saturday.
