Department of Justice confirms prisoner climbed roof at Greenough Regional Prison requiring action from guards

Guards at Greenough Regional Prison responded to an unusual event after a prisoner managed to avoid detection and climb on to a rooftop. A Department of Justice spokesperson said a male prisoner climbed on to the roof at the prison on Monday afternoon. The prisoner caused minor damage before coming down and surrendering to guards. The spokesperson confirmed no one was injured during the incident and there was no risk to the community. Officers were equipped with riot shields and batons while the incident was occurring. It is understood the prisoner was having a mental episode and smashed glass panels. It took more than an hour before the prisoner came down. The WA Prison Officers’ Union was contacted for comment.
