DFES warning of out of control Waggrakine bushfire

Firefighters are currently battling an “out of control and unpredictable” bushfire in the Geraldton suburb of Waggrakine.

The fire was initially reported at 11:20am today, however, the situation has escalated due to the current weather conditions.

At 1:15 pm DFES upgraded the alert saying residents should leave now if the way is clear because there is a possible threat to lives and homes in the area and conditions are changing.

“If you are not at home, do not try to return as conditions in the area could be very dangerous,” the alert read.

Currently the bushfire is out of control and unpredictable, moving fast in a southerly direction.

40 firefighters from the Bush Fire Service, Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Career Fire and Rescue Service are currently in attendance.

A number of roads in the area have been closed including Chapman Valley Road, Stephen Road, Hacket Drive, Sutcliffe Road and Bore Road.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and be aware of fire and emergency services personnel working to control the blaze.

At this time the cause of the fire is unknown.
