Dix at the double as Cardinals take Geraldton hockey title with win over Murchison
Cardinals beat Murchison to win the Geraldton senior women’s hockey title on Saturday.
They won 2-1 in a hard-fought battle.
Gemma Dix, the competition’s top scorer, got both of Cardinals’ goals while second-highest scorer Kayley King replied for Murchison.
Dix ran hard and was often isolated up forward as both teams battled it out in defence and midfield.
Both teams came close before Cardinals broke the deadlock before scoring their second late on in the game.
Both sides showed good sportsmanship with few fouls and penalties, and both had their chances. Ultimately Dix was too deadly.
Murchison’s Kayley King was second-top scorer but could not make a breakthrough.
The result was the reverse of the two sides’ second semifinal two weeks ago. In that game, Lauren Martin and Zoe Rowcroft scored to give Murchison the win, 2-0.
It meant Murchison had the week off and Cardinals went the longer way around to the final.
But they were able to get past Australs 2-0 in the preliminary last Friday as Dix and Kiara Jones and each scored.
