Dongara community celebrates its fishing industry with Blessing of the Fleet 50th anniversary

Dongara’s community came together over the weekend to celebrate its fishing industry and put on a show in the process. The Blessing of the Fleet, the yearly tradition of having the local fishing fleet blessed before the season begins, hit its 50th anniversary this year when it was celebrated on January 7. Since 1973 the day has been a highlight in the Dongara calendar, with events for the whole family. Thirteen boats took part in the boat parade to kick the day off, with Que Sera winning the prize. The Western Nationals Rope Coiling competition, another part of the yearly tradition of the event, was won by Ashley Cole, while the open event was won by Jonathon Buist, the vets competition by John Fitzharding and the women’s competition by Emily Cole. A bouncy castle and face painting activities were also available for kids to enjoy The night finished off with a performance from the band Harvest Guide and a fireworks display. Dongara local Chelsea Moucemore said the day reflected how important fishing was for the local community. “It’s important, it’s all about good luck for the season, and making sure everyone makes it safe,” she said.
