A man in his 50s has narrowly escaped serious injuries after rolling his four-wheel-drive and a caravan it was towing when he swerved to avoid hitting a goat near Kalbarri.

The accident happened on Saturday about 12.15pm while the man was travelling on the North West Coastal Highway.

A police spokeswoman said the driver lost control after swerving onto the gravel verge when a goat ran across the road.

She said the 4WD and trailer were damaged but the driver was lucky to escape with only minor bruising.

He was held in hospital overnight for observation but discharged on Sunday morning.

Kalbarri police posted a photo of the incident to Twitter, along with this reminder for motorists: “If you see wildlife on the road, please don’t swerve! This motorist escaped with minor injuries only.”
