The fire alert for Wonthella was downgraded to an Advice level after a bushfire reached a critical point yesterday evening, endangering homes and lives.

Flores Road between Fifth Street and Utakarra Road and Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Streets between Flores Road and Howard Street have all reopened to traffic.

However, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has asked motorists to exercise caution as smoke and ash might remain in the area.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully due to smoke and fire and emergency services personnel working on site,” said a DFES spokesperson.

DFES have the fire contained and under control. There is no longer an immediate threat. But residents should keep up to date in case the situation changes.

DFES said the fire started at the intersection of Eighth Street and Flores Road in Wonthella.
