Time is running out to enter Regional Alliance West’s Law Week art competition, aimed at highlighting the impact the legal system and profession has on ordinary lives that often gets taken for granted.

The competition is open to people who live in the Mid West, Murchison and Gascoyne regions.

RAW, a community legal centre that provides free information and advice as well as advocate for law reform, has run the Hester Coetsee competition for four years. It is named after the former employee who developed the idea and this year’s theme is “Law and the Homes We Live In”.

RAW principal solicitor Alison Muller said the competition hoped to draw focus to something many people took for granted.

“Whether we are buying, selling, building, renovating or renting our homes, it is all regulated by some sort of law which affects us,” she said.

“Often people associate the law with crime and court, but this competition focuses on the fact that the legal profession touches many aspects of our lives, often without us realising it.”

Budding artists can enter in three categories — under 12s ($750 prize), 12 to 17 years ($1000 prize) and 18+ ($1500 prize).

Entries close at 4pm on Thursday and photographs of the work should be emailed to legal@raw.org.au.

Winners will be announced at the Geraldton Mutipurpose Centre on May 16.

Law Week, managed by the Law Society of WA, runs from May 15 to 21 and this year’s theme is Justice, Inclusion and Community.
