Federal Government backs ‘golden opportunity’ for investment in the Gascoyne

Construction on a major rare earths project in the Gascoyne is set to begin following a $140 million funding commitment by the Federal Government. Located 250km north-east of Carnarvon, Hastings Technology Metals’ Yangibana plant has the world’s highest composition of neodymium and praseodymium, which are used in the manufacture of permanent magnets. Work has already started onsite and will support a peak construction workforce of nearly 500 and more than 250 permanent jobs over an initial 15-year mine life once complete. Carnarvon Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Paul Dixon said the project would provide a major boon to the region’s economy. “The Yangibana project has already been utilising the services of local businesses and contractors so this funding announcement should now provide an increased level of confidence for people and businesses to invest in Carnarvon and the region,” he said. Shire of Upper Gascoyne chief executive John McCleary said the project would see local development and growth take a “quantum leap”. Member for North West Central Vince Catania described the project as a “golden opportunity” for the Gascoyne. “With the prospect of around 30-40 jobs in Onslow and another 250 permanent jobs being created, we need to ensure our Gascoyne region capitalises on this opportunity, catering for a residential workforce based in Carnarvon, Gascoyne Junction and Onslow — not FIFO roles from Perth,” he said. “A residential workforce in the Gascoyne could boost our population by 500 people or more across towns and not only provide many locals with job opportunities, but also a huge boost to businesses and our communities in general, including our State’s economy. “In terms of regional growth and development, the potential to support the Hastings project with infrastructure in both Gascoyne Junction and Carnarvon —the regional centre — is not only a game changer, but is critical.”
