Fire crews are mopping up a bushfire near Greenough Regional Prison which burnt out between 80 and 90 hectares of privately owned farmland.

A City of Greater Geraldton spokeswoman said the fire was contained and controlled.

The blaze, which had a one kilometre front, was reported about 10.30am today, 2.5 kilometres south of the prison, near the corner of Edward and Bootenal roads.

Motorists are asked to avoid Edward Road south of the prison until further notice.

Bush fire brigades from Cape Burney, Moonyoonooka and Walkaway, along with fire control officers from Walkaway, with heavy machinery support from the City, brought the blaze under control.
