The latest taste test led us to the newly opened Geraldton Kebabs, which promised something new and exciting.

First, I feel compelled to mention that our first visit to Geraldton Kebabs was very much a non-starter. Even after ringing through our order in plenty of time, when we went to pick it up they sadly had sold out of food. While the staff were apologetic, this obviously was frustrating to say the least and wasted a trip across town.

But in the interests of fairness we wanted to give a new business a second shot, and we are very pleased we did.

We chose a selection of dishes, with a mixed snack box, a selection of kebabs and some nuggets and chips for our fussy eaters. At more than $80 it was on the pricey side, but the overall taste did make the cost worth it — just.

The meat in our snack box — featuring doner, chicken, mixed meat and chips — displayed some satisfying flavour, but unfortunately suffered from a little dryness in places. On the plus side, the assortment of sauces provided a welcomed remedy, revitalizing the overall taste and texture. The chips, on the other hand, proved to be the standout element — delightfully crunchy and perfectly complementing the meat. It’s a big statement, but maybe they are the best takeaway chips in Gero!

Turning our attention to the mixed kebab and falafel kebab, we were met with a more consistent offering. Bursting with flavours and maintaining an appealing level of moisture, these items truly delivered on their promise. Each bite offered an interesting combination of textures and tastes, providing a glimpse into the potential of Geraldton Kebabs’ culinary prowess.

The chicken nuggets and chips, unfortunately, posed a bit of a quandary. The chips were undoubtedly well cooked — hot, crispy, and very satisfying. However, the portion size left us wanting more, especially considering the cost. For such a cheap and simple dish, I am surprised they were not more generous with portion sizes.

In terms of service, I could not fault our experience. The staff were helpful and polite and our order was taken and ready to go within 20 minutes. Not bad for such a busy time slot. Although we chose to takeaway, there was plenty of seating inside and ample parking in the shopping centre.

Our experience offered glimpses of potential and moments of enjoyment, but also revealed areas that could benefit from further refinement. I must say though, for a business that is still finding their feet they are doing quite well, even with a few initial hiccups.

The diversity and evolving landscape of Geraldton’s food scene are undoubtedly enriched by establishments like Geraldton Kebabs. As they continue to fine-tune their offerings and heed the feedback of their patrons, I look forward to witnessing their evolution. Would I recommend them? Yes, 100 per cent, but don’t expect perfection — just yet.
