Flavour Report with Derek Goforth: Greenough Cafe has quaintness and alpacas, but does it have flavour?

During the school holidays, it’s always nice to escape the city, which led us to review the delightful Central Greenough Cafe. The parking was hassle-free and we were pleasantly surprised by the quick and polite service. While we waited for our orders, we had the opportunity to explore a charming gift shop attached to the cafe. Our selection included a couple of fruit scones, coffees, a milkshake and both veggie and beef nachos. With a total bill of just more than $60, we found the prices slightly on the higher side, considering the portion sizes of the coffees and dishes. To be fair, the cafe did show us the latte glasses in advance, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the scones but I found them a bit underwhelming. They were too soft and seemed slightly undercooked. I would have preferred a bit more whipped cream, but being from Yorkshire, perhaps my morning tea standards are a tad high. Nevertheless, one of the reasons I appreciate having others join me for these reviews is to gather different perspectives and both my daughter and wife were more than pleased with the cafe’s offerings. The nachos were well-presented and adorned with either veggie or meaty delights. Although the portion sizes were a bit smaller, the dishes were bursting with flavour. As for the drinks, they were satisfactory; nothing extraordinary, but a decent brew nonetheless. The caramel milkshake, in particular, was prepared and presented traditionally, which was a delightful touch. All this being said, what truly sets this cafe apart is its location. Nestled in the historic centre of Greenough, surrounded by quaint buildings and structures, it exudes a special charm. An added bonus was the opportunity to interact with the alpacas — an experience that enhanced our visit. Would I recommend Greenough Cafe? Well, yes, I suppose so. However, it’s worth noting that the cafe benefits from having a somewhat captive audience. I wonder how they would fare if faced with competition in the area.
