Flavour Report with Derek Goforth: Native ingredients provide unexpected delight at RT Cafe and Restaurant

If you’re looking for a hidden culinary gem in Geraldton, look no further than RT Cafe and Restaurant. On arrival, my party and I were seated promptly and greeted by a friendly server who was quick to provide helpful information about the menu. We opted for the eggs benedict to share, along with a couple of cappuccinos. Though on the pricier side for Geraldton, at just over $40, the portion size certainly reflected the higher price point. The eggs benedict came with two slices of toast, two perfectly cooked eggs, and plenty of salmon and sauce for both of us. While the coffee was nothing particularly special, it was smooth and well-balanced. And, it must be noted, the serving size was generous, providing enough caffeine to keep us going for days. But the true star of the meal was the hollandaise sauce, flavoured with mild aniseed myrtle. I had never heard of this ingredient before, but the flavour it imparted was divine. The texture was also perfect, smooth and creamy, exactly as hollandaise sauce should be. Overall, the quality of the food at RT Cafe was exceptional, but what really sets this establishment apart is its dedication to using native Australian ingredients and flavours. This commitment is evident not only in the hollandaise sauce but also in other menu items such as wattleseed garlic bread and triple cooked kangaroo tail. In addition to the food, the service at RT Cafe was excellent. Our server was attentive, polite, and knowledgeable about the menu. The atmosphere was also pleasant, with plenty of space both inside and out. What really impressed me was the attention to detail that RT Cafe puts into each dish. Even the toast was perfectly crisp and nicely browned, showing that every element of the meal was given careful consideration. Another standout element of RT Cafe was the location. Situated on Marine Terrace, the cafe offers stunning views of the ocean. Whether you’re seated inside or out, you can enjoy the beautiful scenery while you dine. If you’re looking for something beyond the typical breakfast fare, RT Cafe is definitely worth a visit. Their menu is creative and offers a range of dishes that you won’t find anywhere else in Geraldton.
