Former Geraldton student aims to stir from coffee shop to electronic pop

She went through school in Geraldton as Annie Newcombe. Now she’s Annie Joelle — for musical reasons — and is making her move on the industry. A graduate of Geraldton Grammar School in 2015, Annie was a house captain and a chapel prefect. But it was music — she was a member of the Geraldton Grammar School band and choir — in which she excelled, her dreams driven by encouraging music teachers. “I moved to Perth in 2016 and did a diploma (of music) before shifting to Brisbane in 2017,” Annie, 22, said. “I then started a bachelor in contemporary singing at an academy. “I have just released a single called Unavailable, on Spotify and iTunes. It’s electronic pop. “Unavailable follows singles titled Have You Had Enough and I Remember.” The Gero girl’s dad and stepmum live in Deepdale and she has two older siblings in Mandurah. She’d hoped to be visiting home now. “COVID-19 put a stop to that,” Annie said. “Prior to it, I was teaching music to early childhood classes and doing cover gigs in clubs and pubs. “Presently, I’m working a couple of days a week as a barista . . . but it’s music I want to be in full-time. “I’m recording another single now . . . and doing a spot of surfing on the Gold Coast.” Geraldton musician Darcy Hay up for WAM Song of the Year award
