Free information sessions from Legal Aid WA and Your Story Disability Legal Support, to show people how to navigate the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and provide feedback to the Disability Royal Commission, will be on offer in Mid West towns this week.

The groups will be holding sessions on Tuesday in Kalbarri and Northampton and on Thursday in Geraldton.

The events are open to all, including people with disability, family members, friends, carers, advocates and supporters.

Legal Aid WA civil law director Gemma Mitchell said the organisation was seeing a growing number of people seeking to appeal an NDIS rejection across WA.

“We know many of the clients who come to us for help with NDIS appeals have mental health conditions, and we are committed to taking a whole-of-organisation approach to working with clients who have a disability,” she said.

The Disability Royal Commission was established in 2019 and seeks to investigate how people with disabilities can be better helped, protected and respected by listening to members of the community.

Your Story Disability Legal Support lawyer Demi Thackrah said it was important to make sure regional Australians could have their input in the commission.

“It’s vital that the royal commission hears from people with lived experience, including those in regional areas, so that its recommendations to Government properly reflect their needs and priorities,” she said.

“We want to let Mid West communities know that their stories matter, and we can support them to share them before submissions close at the end of the year.”

Sessions will be held on Tuesday November 1 in Kalbarri from 9.30am-11.30am, and in Northampton from 2pm-4pm; and on Thursday November 3 in Geraldton.
