Geraldton a hockey hub for more than 200 students at regional carnival

More than 200 hockey players gathered in Geraldton for a regional hockey carnival, with top performers Geraldton Grammar School among eight schools from the Mid West represented. The CSBP hockey carnival was held at the Geraldton Hockey Stadium on May 30, where 21 teams from Geraldton schools, Mingenew primary and Carnamah district high schools competed. Hockey WA partnered with CSBP Fertiliser to provide financial support in bringing the hockey carnivals and clinics to regional areas in WA. At the Geraldton event Perth Thundersticks star Brodee Foster ran skills clinics before the carnival. Schools went head-to-head in a round-robin style tournament across three different pools of gold, blue and white. Geraldton Grammar School was the top school for the event, winning in the gold and blue pools while taking top spot in white pool. General manager for CSBP Fertilisers Ryan Lamp said the company was proud to support causes in regional WA. “Events like this give young players, some who may never have picked up a hockey stick before, the chance to develop their physical and social skills in a fun and safe team environment,” he said. “They also provide more experienced players with the opportunity to learn from some of the State’s leading coaches and hockey players.” Hockey WA community and growth manager Kristen Jerkovich said the carnival has grown exponentially since they last visited Geraldton. “This year’s carnival received massive support from schools in the Mid West region, featuring 21 teams, which is more than double the number of teams we had the last time we visited Geraldton in 2022,” Ms Jerkovich said. “It was also fantastic to see teams travel from as far as Mingenew and Carnamah to take part in the carnival, making this year’s event even more memorable. “Hockey WA is looking forward to upcoming carnivals and our continued partnership with CSBP.” More regional carnivals and clinics will run in Esperance, Northam and Narrogin later this year.
