The Geraldton Buccaneers are holding trials for basketball prospects looking for a chance to show off their skills and impress the coaches before the upcoming season. Tryouts are open for anyone born prior to and including 2008 and are being held this weekend from January 13-14 at Activewest Stadium from 7am. Coming off their championship winning season, the Buccs are looking to bolster their roster and local up-and-comers are encouraged to try out for the NBL1 West and WABL division one teams. Buccaneers head coach Dayle Joseph said the trials were a great opportunity to get young players into their development programs. “Just looking forward to giving some of the younger guys an opportunity to show their wares,” he said. “Some of them are still a few years away from being NBL1 players, but (it) gives them an opportunity to try and show their wares and show what they’ve got, maybe we can throw them in the system a bit after that.” Many players who have gone through the programs have proceeded to make a big impact and could go the step further. “You talk about Harry (Evans), Bob (Griechen), Tom Dobson, they’ve all been through that process,” Joseph said. “There’s kids already in the State program, Dan (Hunt) has been doing a lot of stuff with some of the younger guys, getting them ready for State teams. “Hopefully the next step for them is to make our division one team, then who knows what happens from there.” To register for the tryouts visit https://www.playhq.com/basketball-wa/register/43d8d9. Anyone who is successful at trials needs full commitment to the program and all home and away games for the 2024 season.
