Geraldton Christian College puts personal touch on remote learning as COVID spreads

As more Geraldton residents enter COVID isolation each day, one Geraldton school has been praised for going “above and beyond” to keep learning from home fun. In the lead up to the April school holidays, Geraldton Christian College saw an increase in COVID-related absentees due to students becoming infected or being identified as close contacts. College COVID response team member Kathy Boase has put a personal touch to remote learning by hand-delivering learning packs of textbooks and school work to the doors of families in isolation. The packs are created by teachers and education assistants, who also continue to present lessons to students unable to attend classes in person. While a seemingly simple gesture, one mother said she could not have survived COVID quarantine without the support of Mrs Boase and the rest of the team. “They have been encouraging and flexible during our isolation, especially considering we had several days of bad symptoms where we did little more than eat and sleep,” she told the College. College deputy principal for curriculum Sophia de Lange said it was no easy feat to run face-to-face classes and ensure those learning from home did not fall behind. “We recognise (learning packs) can never replace face-to-face learning, but we do what we can at the moment. We are doing our best in partnership with parents to support our students,” she said.
