Geraldton church leaders welcome community to Good Friday and Easter services

In messages to the community, Geraldton’s church leaders are wishing everyone a happy Easter and urging them to use the occasion to reflect and remember the true meaning behind the holiday. Catholic Diocese of Geraldton Bishop Michael Morrissey Easter cannot happen without Good Friday. It might seem rather obvious to make such a statement, as Christians hold very dear to their hearts this wonderful mystery of Jesus Christ who came among us, suffered a cruel death, and rose from the dead. For those in our communities suffering or experiencing conflict and confusion, life at times can be very much like a Good Friday. Despite the good we do and the love we share, sometimes things just don’t go well. Where then is the hope in the Good Friday in our lives? For me, my hope is found in the great gift of God the father who sent his son, Jesus Christ, to live in the midst of humanity, who walks with me in the highs and lows, offering a hope that is always present to me and found often in the small but significant ways through relationships and connections with others. As we celebrate Easter in 2024, my hope for everyone is, despite the Good Friday moments in life, there will be those moments and times where situations and answers can be seen in a new and surprising way. Death is our greatest enemy, so if Jesus conquered death, then we no longer need to fear it. Jesus’ resurrection brings us great hope because Jesus has promised that all those who have faith in him will also rise from the dead. This resurrection hope lifts our eyes beyond what we can see and experience in this world and focuses us into the eternal life to come. Geraldton Anglican Cathedral will be celebrating this resurrection hope this Easter, as we remember Jesus’ death on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Life after death is certainly a big perk but the truth is he paid for more than that; he paid for our freedom now! He died and rose so that we can begin new life today. A new life where we’re free from the bondage of sin. We’re not suggesting you’ll never do anything wrong again, we’re saying that Jesus has paid for our freedom now and the more we choose to follow him and his ways, the more of his freedom we experience during this life. We can all relate to the burdens that life brings. The consequences of our choices can weigh heavy on us. Easter is an important Christian festival; it’s when Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Bible says that Christ died on a cross on a day called Good Friday and was buried for three days. Then true to scripture, Jesus was resurrected and came back to life on Easter Sunday. The good news is that the risen Saviour (Jesus) offers eternal life and forgiveness of sins to you, no matter how badly you have failed God. But you must personally receive his offer of love by faith. So, to experience God’s love and forgiveness, turn from your sin, and put your trust in what Jesus did for you on the cross. If you will believe in Jesus Christ as the one who bore your sins, God promises that you will not perish, but have eternal life. May the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, fill your heart with hope and purpose this Easter season. Have a blessed Easter!
