Geraldton fell just short for the second year in a row, claiming silver in the 2023 7News Top Tourism Award. While it didn’t win, the second place finish for two years in a row proves the Mid West city is one of the more popular tourist destinations in the State. Mandurah took home the gold for a second year in a row, while Collie was given the bronze. City of Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn said this is still a win for the city. “We’re over the moon to take out silver in this year’s 7NEWS Top Tourism Town Awards,” he said. “The City of Greater Geraldton has been dedicated to growing tourism and increasing visitation to our region for quite some time and we are seeing the successful outcome of our efforts.” The silver medal is an indication of how the city has become the tourist hub for the Mid West. “We’ve come a long way in terms of tourism in the last five years, and the future of tourism in Geraldton is exciting,” Mr Van Styn said. “We’d like to congratulate Mandurah for taking out the top award, and we will continue to set our sights on gold in the coming years. I would also like to thank everyone for their support and voting for Geraldton.” The winners were announced at the 2023 Perth Airport WA Regional Tourism Conference dinner in Kalgoorlie-Boulder on Tuesday. Mandurah will receive a $25,000 airtime package to promote the town on 7 regional WA. Exmouth took gold in the small tourism town category while Dwellingup was the winner in the tiny tourism town section. Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said: “All medallists have impressed both an industry panel of judges and the public through consumer voting.” More than 8000 people voted for their top towns.
