Geraldton community group Theatre 8 showcases Tony Award-winning play God of Carnage

Audience members can expect drama, grit and dark humour as Geraldton’s community theatre company, Theatre 8, showcases their rendition of the Tony award-winning play, The God of Carnage. The cast of four began rehearsing the play, originally written by French playwright Yasmina Reza in early February under the guidance of director Russell Pusey. The production follows two sets of parents as they navigate a sinister playground incident between their two children, Ferdinand and Bruno. As the play progresses, the parents who had agreed to discuss the matter in a civilised manner, wear down their polite veneer. Kath Jones brings the controlling and forceful character of Veronica Novak to life alongside Carlie Taylor, newcomer Gary Maxville and Theatre 8 veteran, Mark Long. The cast has been rehearsing three times a week in two-hour blocks outside of their usual day jobs. “It’s always interesting to speak to the audience afterwards, because they expect to hate you after what they’ve just seen on stage,” said Jones, a testament to how well she has executed her role. “The humour is really intelligent and no one is overacting — it’s very natural comedy.” The play premiered last weekend on April 28 and 29, and is on again this weekend before finishing on May 12-13. Tickets are $25 and go towards keeping the doors of the not-for-profit company open.
