Geraldton couples take honours in national Rock‘n’Roll championships in Perth

Two Geraldton couples have represented WA in the National Rock‘n’Roll Championship, swinging and moving to take home a combined 12 awards. The national competition, which showcases 50s style rock‘n’roll dancing, took place in Perth on March 23 and 24, with competitors from across Australia gathering to compete. Batavia Rockers Club was represented by Beatrice Arangio and Dave Gibson, and Julie and Peter Liardet. Ms Arangio and Mr Gibson took home six trophies, one silver and two bronze medals. Meanwhile, Mr and Mrs Liardet won three bronze medals. Ms Arangio said she felt the heat of the competition. “I was nervous throughout, it was really challenging, ” she said. “The other states had such good dancers.” Ms Arangio, who is originally from France but found a home in Geraldton, has been dancing for a number of years with Batavia Rockers. She said she was proud to represent the club in Perth after performing strongly. “We just couldn’t believe it, we got lots of encouragement from the judges after the competition,” she said. “Julie and Peter also did really well for their first competition, they showed a lot of heart and bravery.” “It’s all been thanks to our teachers, they’ve been really good and very encouraging.” Batavia Rockers president Daryl Weddell said they represented the club and the State admirably. “We’re very proud of what they’ve done and achieved,” he said. “They’re all very good dancers and they practise all the time together.” Ms Arangio encouraged people to get involved in the club, who meet Tuesday nights at the Casa Blanca Centre.
