A Geraldton engineering firm has received a $50,000 order for a safety roller crash barrier to be installed at the Murdoch Drive on-ramp to Kwinana Freeway in Perth’s southern suburbs.

KSI Global Australia logistics supervisor John Wheatland said the firm had already installed similar barriers at the Roe Highway-Kwinana Freeway on-ramp northbound, in India, and two locations in Victoria.

He said a vehicle hit one of these, in Laverton, Victoria, at an estimated 150km/h in January, and the driver escaped and jumped a fence before he was arrested.

KSI proprietor Kyle Wheatland, who owns the rights to the technology, said it worked by converting the energy of the speeding vehicle into rotational energy.

He thanked Transport Minister Rita Saffioti and Main Roads WA for the contract.
