Geraldton girl who attacked pizza delivery driver sentenced in Children’s Court

A Geraldton teenage girl who viciously attacked and robbed a pizza delivery driver last month has been handed a 12-month youth supervision order. The 14-year-old girl appeared in Geraldton Children’s Court on Tuesday for sentencing on one count of aggravated robbery. Prosecutor Sgt Beau Jones said the girl and a co-accused approached a 17-year old pizza delivery driver in Karloo on August 1 demanding money. When the victim refused they stated “give us the money or we will bash you”. The delivery driver became concerned for her safety and went back inside the car. They followed her into the car and proceeded to throw an EFTPOS machine and pizza bags at the victim. The victim exited the vehicle, at which point she was punched, dragged to the ground and had her phone stolen. The two 14-year-old girls ran off and were arrested at an address in Rangeway later that night. Sgt Jones said the victim sustained bruises and bleeding to the elbows. The court was told the co-offender received a 12-month youth supervision order. Magistrate Angus Hockton said the offending was serious and if the girl was an adult she would be going to prison. He said the victim was vulnerable and they threatened and intimidated her when was alone. Lawyer Veronica Randall said the girl understood the seriousness of the charges. The court was told the 14-year-old girl has problems with substances, is currently not going to school and her father is in custody. “Don’t put yourself in that same position,” Mr Hockton said. Taking into account the girl’s guilty plea at the earliest opportunity, Mr Hockton sentenced her to a 12-month youth supervision order. He encouraged her to get back into sport, take up a referral for Headspace and said “the more you put in, the more you get out”.
