Geraldton Grammar School hosts special 30th anniversary event for past, present students, staff, families

The community past and present that has shaped Geraldton Grammar School came together last weekend to mark its 30th anniversary. Families, past students, alumni and staff united on Saturday, January 31, for an anniversary that provided fun and reflection in equal measure. Held at the school’s Batavia Hall Gardens, the relaxed and family-friendly celebration welcomed hundreds of attendees who reconnected, reminisced and recognised the school’s rich history and bright future. There was something on offer for children and adults — including mini golf, a bouncy castle, inflatable obstacle course, waterslide, dunk tank, balloon animals, pony rides, face painting and arts and crafts. Attendees also enjoyed a library book sale, anniversary merchandise and a special cake-cutting ceremony. Local food vendors — Wicked Waffles, JB Cuisine, OMG Donuts, Rogue Tapas and the school’s P&F sausage sizzle — kept the crowd satisfied throughout the afternoon. Geraldton Grammar School principal Brad Gill said the event was a powerful reflection of the school’s enduring values and strong community spirit. “Celebrating 30 years of Geraldton Grammar School is about more than marking time — it’s about recognising the generations of students, families, staff and supporters who have helped shape our school into what it is today,” he said. “Seeing past students reconnect, families come together, and our community celebrating side by side was incredibly special. It reinforces the strong sense of belonging that defines Geraldton Grammar School and gives us great excitement for the future.” Some VIPs graced the celebration, including Sheila Flanagan who was a driving force in creating the school more than 30 years ago as well as Susan Shaw, the school’s first and longest-serving principal. Ms Shaw followed in the footsteps of Geraldton Grammar School’s first and only headmaster Tony Brooker. Ms Flanagan and Ms Shaw cut the 30th anniversary birthday cake alongside others who were present on the school’s very first day in 1996. While offering the chance for past students and staff to reconnect, the celebration was also an opportunity to welcome current families back to school for the year ahead. The school will continue celebrating its 30th anniversary throughout 2026.
