Geraldton lobbies for support in its bid to be named GWN7 Top Tourism Town

Those behind Geraldton’s bid to be named WA’s top tourism town aren’t satisfied to just be nominated — they want to win. The capital of the Mid West is one of seven finalists in the GWN7 Top Tourism Town Awards, with its competition coming from Collie, Esperance, Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Karratha, Kununurra and Mandurah. A City of Greater Geraldton spokesperson said the City was pumped to be on the shortlist, but was aiming for the top gong. “Geraldton came bronze last year and this year we have our eyes set firmly on gold,” they said. In its video submission for the awards, Geraldton’s family-friendly foreshore, “sunny all-year-round” weather, stretches of glorious beaches, adventure opportunities, spectacular natural landscapes, rich heritage sites, “quirky” retail strip, cafe scene and the neighbouring one-of-a-kind paradise that is the Abrolhos Islands were listed as reasons for what made the “heart of the Coral Coast” so special and attractive to visitors. Geraldton last won the top tourism town award in 2016. The City is urging people to vote for Geraldton and help the city claim the top gong again. Voting closes on Tuesday, May 24. People who vote also have the chance to win a $5000 WA travel voucher or $550 cash to spend at any RAC park or resort. There are also categories for WA’s top small and tiny tourism towns. Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall encouraged people to get behind their favourite holiday destination within WA. “It could be a town you’ve only just discovered, but where you felt incredibly welcomed in your time there — or it could be the place you visit year in, year out because you always have a fantastic experience.
