Geraldton locals encouraged to give back to the environment and celebrate National Tree Day this weekend

Geraldton locals are encouraged to get their hands dirty this weekend for National Tree Day, and help the environment in the process. The City of Greater Geraldton and Birdlife Midwest-Geraldton are encouraging people to take part in a free tree planting day at the Greenough River Mouth and help to rehabilitate the coastal dunes. City deputy mayor Natasha Colliver said there were many reasons to revegetate coastal reserves. “Revegetating sand dunes creates wildlife habitats and provides important food resources,” she said. “It is also crucial for coastal protection as the vegetation acts as a natural buffer against erosion from wind and waves.” “This year the city has partnered with Birdlife Midwest-Geraldton and Planet Ark to plant 800 seedlings which will be counted towards National Tree Day and the City’s Million Trees Project.” Interested people can meet at the Greenough River carpark from 9am to 11am on Saturday, July 26. No gardening experience is required and refreshments will be provided. People should wear suitable clothes and footwear as well as bring their own gloves and water bottle. Founded in 1996, National Tree Day is being celebrated this year on Sunday, July 27. The Geraldton Tree Canopy Advocates Group plans to celebrate National Tree Day on Sunday at 10am by planting a couple of Moreton Bay figs on Stella Maris Drive. They say “everyone is welcome”, especially if you have a passion for “growing big things from little things”.
