Geraldton man caught allegedly illegally catching 127 abalone near Cape Burney could face prosecution
A Geraldton man is being investigated after allegedly being caught with a haul of 127 abalone from a no-go fishing zone on a reef south of Cape Burney.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development said its compliance officers spotted the 53-year-old man fishing on a reef platform on December 23 at 6.30am.
When the officers stopped the man and checked his backpack, they allegedly found 127 Roe’s abalone, along with a screwdriver.
Abalone fishing north of Moore River has been banned since 2011 in an attempt to protect low populations after a devastating heatwave.
A DPIRD spokesperson said an investigation into the incident was ongoing, with a view to prosecution.
DPIRD regional compliance director for the Mid West Mick Kelly said protecting abalone was a task the department took seriously.
“We know from past cases of people fishing for abalone in the closed area that fines, and penalties can be significant,” Mr Kelly said.
DPIRD asked people to report concerns to FishWatch, either online or on 1800 815 507, if they suspect illegal fishing, or to use the CrimeStoppers online form.
