Geraldton man who sent “frightening” death threats to ex-partner gets suspended sentence

A Geraldton man who told his ex-partner he wanted her to die a “slow and painful” death after a drug use relapse has avoided jail. Appearing in Geraldton’s Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, Conal Matthew Savins, 38, pleaded guilty to threatening to kill his former partner of seven years. Prosecutor Sgt Beau Jones told the court Savins had sent several threatening messages to the woman, with one text reading, “I think about killing you all the time”. Savins said the woman should “get (her) affairs in order” and “there is no meaning in (his) life except taking (hers)”. Another message read, “I want you dead ... I hate you so much”. But Sgt Jones said the woman did not know this when she received the threats. “The victim would not have been aware of the accused’s location ... it would have been extremely distressing,” he said. The man’s lawyer said Savins had “turned his life around” since the incident, which occurred during a “brief but devastating” relapse of drug use. Savins “deeply regrets what he did”, the lawyer told the court. The lawyer said Savins’ references “speak highly of him”, with many “surprised” to learn he had been charged. Deputy Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Woods described the messages as “frightening” but was confident Savins had displayed genuine remorse about his actions. “You have now realised where you have gone wrong,” she said. She also took his early guilty plea, positive references and an “unusually” comprehensive letter Savins wrote to the court in making her decision. Savins was given a suspended sentence of eight months and ordered to pay $130.50 court costs.
