Geraldton mayor Shane Van Styn says he will vigorously contest a charge of assault occasioning bodily harm in relation to an alleged incident at Kalbarri.

Mr Van Styn maintains he is innocent in relation to the alleged incident at a licensed premises on Saturday, April 6.

“I will be vigorously defending the charge and expect many people present at the time of the alleged incident to come out in support of myself at the appropriate time,” he said this morning.

“As the matter is before the court I have nothing further to add.”

Mr Van Styn has been bailed to appear before Geraldton Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

Police confirmed they were investigating the alleged assault and had charged a 41-year-old Geraldton man.
