Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn’s stolen bike recovered in ‘semi-covert operation’ by off-duty police officer

Geraldton police have successfully recovered Mayor Shane Van Styn’s stolen mountain bike in a matter of days in what the officer-in-charge says was a “semi-covert operation” by an off-duty officer. During a home burglary on Saturday, July 23, Mr Van Styn’s $4000 bike was stolen along with a $50 note and an ornamental sword while he was out of the house enjoying birthday lunch celebrations. Officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Chris Martin said the Geraldton police officer who located the mountain bike was off-duty when he witnessed an alleged suspect riding the stolen bike in Bluff Point. He said the officer had viewed pictures identifying the stolen bicycle during his shift. “The officer recognised the bike and saw the suspect who was riding it,” he said. Sen. Sgt Martin said the off-duty officer allegedly contacted officers at the station to advise them of his sightings. “The on-duty officers arrived at the scene in Bluff Point and the suspect ran off when he noticed police,” he said. He said the suspect left the mountain bike at the location which was recovered and taken back to the police station. Police officers have not made arrests but Sen. Sgt Martin said they were conducting further inquiries to track down the suspect. “We know who he is and will catch up with him in a few days,” he said. “This is another good example of how police officers on- or off-duty are always prepared to solve crime. “The community should have confidence the police officers are always in the area.” Mr Van Styn said it was great to see police going above and beyond the call of duty and he was happy to have the bike recovered in such a short time. “I’m very grateful for the police, in particular the off-duty officer who saw the bike and challenged the individual,” he said. Mr Van Styn said he had personally thanked the off-duty officer for his help in recovering the bike. “To have the bike back in a matter of a few days and to know the police even off-duty are still remaining vigilant is something I’m very proud of,” he said.
