Geraldton Museum on country photo exhibition to kick off Iwarra Wilungga 2024

An on country photo exhibition will open this weekend as a prelude to next month’s Iwarra Wilungga festival celebrating Aboriginal arts and culture. It is the second edition of the festival, which translates to “Spring by the Sea” in homage of the original event. The festival acknowledges and respects it will run during the autumn season “Urnura”. The exhibition at the Museum of Geraldton, which runs from March 23 to April 29, depicts some of the best on country moments. Those who entered were asked to capture what “on country” meant to them and the photos will be judged on the theme, originality and appeal. City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said more than 50 photos would be on display. “We’re absolutely delighted by the response and number of entries in the Best Moments on Country Photo Exhibition and Competition as part of the Iwarra Wilungga Festival,” he said. “All entrants are from the Mid West, so it is great to see a number of talented local photographers, both amateur and professional. “With everything from landscapes, people, animals and more, I highly encourage our community to come along and check out the wonderful array of photos featured in the exhibition.” Museum of Geraldton regional manager Leigh O’Brien said she expected the event to be popular. “This exhibition will be featured during the very busy Easter and April school holiday period at the museum, and locals and visitors alike will delight in this showcase of the many special places on country in Geraldton and across the Mid West region and beyond,” she said. “The Museum of Geraldton is delighted to host this exhibition as part of the 2024 Iwarra Wilungga Festival, celebrating the ‘best moments on country’ in this colourful display through the lens of the community.” Several events will be held for the festival over the next two weeks, including poetry readings, an art exhibition and traditional crafts, before the Iwarra Wilungga finale is held on Saturday, April 6. The free event is set to include live music, performances and activities at Queens Park Theatre, where the winners of the photo exhibition will be announced.
