Geraldton musicians’ collective Regional Sounds to rock out old railway station building again

Geraldton’s original railway station will continue to act as a hub for local entertainment and creative development after a successful trial program. Local musicians’ collective Regional Sounds was initially given a six-month licence to use the iconic Marine Terrace building to run music and entertainment activities. In its submission to the council, Regional Sounds said it had “increased activation of the West End” by hosting creative community workshops, live music events, and professional development sessions for artists. The site is currently at the middle of a zoning battle between the State Government, who own the property, and the City of Greater Geraldton — the building manager. But City Mayor Shane Van Styn said the dispute could take another decade to resolve, and he had no problem with Regional Sounds continuing to operate out of the venue. “They have done a wonderful job to date,” he said. The City executive team recommended Regional Sounds’ licence be renewed for another six months, but Cr Natasha Colliver moved this be extended to 12 months. “Noting the success of the initial six-month pilot by Regional Sounds, a six-month lease period is not a reasonable period of time to provide some surety to Regional Sounds as it continues to build on its strategy of developing artists, building community, developing the local music industry and securing its own sustainability,” she said. “(A 12-month lease) will enable them to breathe a little easier . . . which will allow them to be able to focus on their strategy instead of worrying about the roof over their head.” The motion was carried unopposed.
