Geraldton PCYC officially reopened its boxing gym on Monday and unveiled the gym’s redevelopment after James West took up the mantle of head coach. West who was announced as the new head coach back in February brings a wealth of experience having been part of Northam’s PCYC program and the Wheatbelt boxing club. PCYC co-ordinator and centre manager Talya Quinn was excited when speaking about the new coach and the direction the club was heading. “James is extremely passionate about Boxing and combat sports and brings to our community extensive experience he is a Boxing WA and combat sport registered coach as well as Boxing WA level 1 Judge,” she said. “He has a martial arts background with his senior instructor Doce Pares Eskrima and Rapid Arnis Eskrima. “James also has his fight promotions licence and hoping to increase our local combat and Boxing WA events in Geraldton.” The club has big plans for the future, including the development of a junior, youth, and senior fight team, which will provide opportunities for fighters and young people to pursue employment in the industry. To support these plans, the club has converted its upstairs gym into a dedicated senior fighters area, fully decked out with a new boxing ring ( one of the largest in the region), cardio machines and multiple boxing bags. The upstairs area will be open to the community from May 1, and the club is excited to share this new space with everyone.
