Geraldton man Trey Jasper Calyun faces court over alleged stealing $20,000 cash from Broadwater Hotel rooms

A 19-year-old man has been remanded in custody over allegations he broke into a Geraldton resort multiple times and stole an estimated $20,000 cash. Trey Jasper Calyun, 19, appeared in Geraldton Magistrates Court from custody on Thursday, charged with breaching bail, trespass, three counts of no authority to drive, possessing cannabis, five counts of stealing, six counts of burglary and three counts of stealing a motor vehicle. Mr Calyun is yet to enter pleas. Outside court, Geraldton police allege between late Tuesday night, a 19-year-old and a co-accused broke into three rooms at the Broadwater Mariner Resort on Chapman Road. The men are believed to have gained entry by climbing the balcony and entering through unlocked sliding doors. Officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Chris Martin said the accused searched through rooms with a torch and stole an estimated $20,000 cash, medication and a bum bag, which belonged to Chinese tourists. Sen. Sgt Martin said the 19-year-old broke into the apartments twice last week, where car keys, a laptop and two vehicles were stolen, and broke into another apartment the week before on Friday, August 30. Police allegedly arrested the 19-year-old man with the cash in his possession. Sen. Sgt Martin urged visitors and residents alike to stay vigilant and keep their property safely locked away at all times. “If you are a tourist in the area at a hotel, secure your goods and ensure the room is secured properly, including balcony doors,” he said. In court on Thursday, defence counsel Lauren Roycroft said Mr Calyun had never been to prison as an adult and would be vulnerable in custody given his fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnoses. Prosecutor Sgt Paul White opposed bail, stating it was a “compelling” prosecution case. Magistrate Matthew Walton said he would consider home detention bail and ordered a report to assess an address in Utakarra. He was remanded in custody until October 4 for a bail application.
