Geraldton Regional Art Gallery launches two new exhibitions celebrating the mediums of textiles and ceramics

More than 100 people gathered at Geraldton Regional Art Gallery last Friday night to celebrate the launch of two new stunning exhibitions showcasing the use of textiles and ceramics. Textiles of the Janet Holmes a Court Collection — one of the most significant private art collections in Australia — is being exhibited on the ground floor, featuring natural fibre art, silk screen-printed works and stitched hangings. The owner of the collection, Mrs Holmes a Court, was at Geraldton Regional Art Gallery for the exhibition launch and spoke to the crowd. It is one of the few times that multiple artworks from the collection have been curated and displayed in public. The exhibition has been curated by Briony Bray. Upstairs, the second exhibition is Clay on Country, Ceramics from the Central Desert — co-curated by Jo Foster and Neridah Stockley, which contains work from 32 artists and collectives. Both exhibitions feature work from Indigenous artists. City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said the dual exhibitions further cemented the art gallery’s reputation as a leading cultural hub and it was a privilege to share them with art lovers. GRAG arts engagement officer Erin Cleghorn said it was a pleasure to showcase two “underrated mediums”. On opening night, the people’s choice award winner for the gallery’s previous exhibition, the 2025 Mid West Art Prize, was revealed. The award, with a $1500 prize sponsored by Durlacher Dental Care, went to Eliza Thomas for her artwork called Resilience. Textiles of the Janet Holmes a Court Collection and Clay on Country, Ceramics from the Central Desert are showing to the public until April 5.
