Geraldton residents capture stunning photos of rare weather event Aurora Australis

Skies across the country including in Geraldton were treated to a rare solar weather event, with the Aurora Australis lights on display over the weekend. A big geomagnetic storm caused the southern lights to hit the skies on Friday and Saturday night, wowing photographers and stargazers. The event was the first geomagnetic storm warning for the southern lights by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Centre since 2005. Aurora Australis is the phenomenon where pink and red hues take up the night sky due to coronal mass ejections, which are big plasma and magnetised particles being expelled from the Sun’s corona, according to the organisation. The alert was rated a G4, which was the second-highest alert on the scale. Geraldton residents took to social media to share their photos of the rare event.
