Geraldton RSL helps pass on legacy through generations with childcare visit for Remembrance Day

The generational gap is widening in many ways in today’s society, but when it comes to events like Remembrance Day, veterans are determined to keep the legacy alive. Geraldton RSL president Glenn Law this week helped teach the kindy class at Bambi Childcare about the meaning behind November 11. The wombats classroom at Bambi Childcare consists of 28 children aged three to six and they have spent the past two weeks making paper poppies as part of their Remembrance Day commemoration activities. Teacher Kiara Boys said staff had been teaching the kids about Remembrance Day for the past few years, but it was the first time they had a visitor come to speak to the students. “The kids really enjoyed it, and if they go home and say to their parents we need to remember the soldiers this Saturday, then I’ll be stoked,” she said. Mr Law read the famous poem by John McRae, In Flanders Fields, to the class and explained the importance of remembering those who served in the war. “It’s very nice to be able to do this sort of stuff. They’re only little tackers but it’s important to teach them,” Mr Law said. After Mr Law read the poem, he accepted a wreath made of paper poppies from the class and handed out his own poppies to each student. A Remembrance Day ceremony will be held at Birdwood House at 10.30am on Saturday. November 11 this year marks 105 years since the end of World War I.
