Geraldton to experience more Qantas flight cancellations as the airline announces schedule changes

Qantas has announced eight more Geraldton flights have been cancelled from August to September causing further disruption to passengers. The move comes after the airline cancelled 15 Geraldton flights in June and July because of COVID-related issues. Late last month, up to 200 passengers from Broome, Port Hedland and Newman were forced to sleep on the floor at the airport after their flight to Perth was diverted to Geraldton due to fog. Under the scheduled changes, the service will move from two flights a day to one from August 16 to September 9, while the existing planes will be upgraded to Airbus A320s. City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the City was disappointed to see further cancellations but acknowledged the difficulties faced by the airline. “To make up for the lack of two flights a day Qantas has increased the aircraft to A320, meaning at least the same amount of seats are available per day,” he said. “We understand that Geraldton is not unique in that we are seeing regional services cancelled by Qantas and we’ll continue to monitor the situation closely.” Mr Van Styn said they were unsure as to how long the cancellations would continue for. “We were initially advised it might be six or eight weeks, it’s now going out to months and we are obviously seeing air services being cancelled in other towns many months in advance,” he said. “Whilst it’s not desirable to have services reduced, it’s even less desirable to have them cancelled while you’re already at the airport, or days out.
