Geraldton Turf Club horse of the year Kenyluck may be off to city races after bush wins

A Geraldton favourite may be heading for the city soon.

Kenyluck, the two-time reigning horse of the year at Geraldton Turf Club, won on his first start since last season on Wednesday as a good midweek crowd packed into the racecourse for the first meet on the calendar.

Trainer Allan Hughes said the six-year-old gelding was getting ready to move on after winning the Iron Jack Handicap.

“I think his time’s going to befinished here and he’s going to have to go to Perth, because I think he’s won all the bush races he can win,” Hughes said.

“He went horse of the year last year and went horse of the year before. He’s been doing a fantastic job. “The jockey rode him well.”

It was quite the first ride in Geraldton for jockey Rosie Mahoney, who piloted Kenyluck across the line in a photo finish ahead of Natasha Faithfull on Human Nature.

Hughes’s partner, Ros White, said it was a welcome return to racing after winter.

Kenyluck’s last start was at race six at Ascot in May, the Crown Perth Handicap, when he slipped and finished tenth. He finished third in the Yellowglen Plate at Ascot in 2018.

Kenyluck’s last start at Geraldton was the Bunbury Apartment Motel Handicap in April, where he finished third.

Jordan Turner won the GWN Maiden on Traded Crown on Wednesday, trained by George Dupre. Natasha Faithfull on Quan, trained by Sean Rains, won race two, the Abrolhos Adventures Maiden.

Mitchell Pateman took the honours in the TabTouch Better Your Bet Handicap on Blue Horse, trained by Ashley Maley. Shaun O’Donnell on Starorio won the Bunbury Apartment Motel Handicap for trainer Cliff Green.
