Geraldton Turf Club hosts the Dongara Cup on Easter Saturday with local horses in good form

The Dongara Cup, to be hosted in Geraldton this Easter Saturday, has local horses gearing up to fight hard after being swamped by Perth raiders in last weekend’s Geraldton Gold Cup. The Dongara Cup on Saturday — race five on the day and a 1938 metre sprint — has $15,000 in prize money up for grabs. Geraldton Turf Club manager David Wrensted said the horse to watch out for would be the Garry Delane-trained Proxy, who ran fourth in the Geraldton Cup the week prior. A Steamy Affair showed good form and is in the mix with less competition coming from Perth this time around. The six-year-old mare ran a credible race last week and can improve. Trainer Rhona Macphilomey said she was outclassed in the Geraldton Cup, and with jockey Peta Edwards securing a spot she expects a good ride from her. “She should be there about. I think she’s had a really good season, she puts her best hoof forward,” she said. Galaxy Blaze is rearing to perform better this week after placing last in the Geraldton Cup on Sunday. The 10-year-old gelding has two starts on the day, with few left in his career until retirement. Trainer Julia Martin said she’s looking forward to improvement in the upcoming run and wants to see him win at least one last race.
