A variety of organisations with Aboriginal staff and clients came together to celebrate Reconciliation Week in Geraldton.

The Justice and Community Network organised a walk, meeting outside the Jaffle Shack and walking along the Geraldton Foreshore, on Tuesday last week.

Senior Constable Jonine Harrison said the network organised a NAIDOC event every year outside the courthouse and included representatives of the Aboriginal Legal Service, Legal Aid, police, courts, the private solicitors, the indigenous family groups, and the Department of Corrections.

“This month we decided that we would do a walk down and were invited by Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (GRAMS) for our event to meet up with their event,” she said.

Everyone present walked west to a GRAMS-hosted lunch by the POSH centre.

GRAMS chief executive Deb Woods said this was the second time they had hosted lunch on the lawn to mark reconciliation week.

“We’ve invited all of the community to come along and celebrate,” she said.

“I think it’s really important to acknowledge the effort the community has taken and come out and supported the event. And we just hope that next year will be bigger and better. And we’ve got some really important plans on how we can make this bigger and better.”
