The Rats have entered the new year break on a high, with a massive 11-9 win over Demons, handing the top side their first loss of the season. They pulled off the impressive men’s A-grade win against the Demons on Saturday off the back of a five-goal performance from Darcy Wiffen. The star of the show was Quentin Green, whose skills in the Rats’ goal kept the talented Demons forwards from gaining any traction during the game. In the other men’s A-grade game, Relics secured their second win over the B52’s in a hard-fought contest winning 6-5. Drew Tunbridge and Nicholas Pead were exceptional for the winners, scoring and providing superb attacking play. The results see Demons atop of the ladder followed closely by Rats and Relics, with B52’s sitting at the foot of the table heading into the rest period. In women’s A-grade games, Rats faced B52’s while Demons had time to practise and work on tactics against the Composite side. Rats fought hard but ultimately succumbed to the tenacity of the B52’s who won 13-7. Emma Smith, Aimee Horsman, Abbie Benham, and Maddie Pead all scored and set up their teammates at key points in the game. Sophia Kalajzich scored five of Rats’ goals, displaying relentless energy throughout the match. Demons looked good against the Composite side winning 4-2, with Mel Buscumb keeping her eyes wide open to prevent star Composite players from scoring. The two results see B52’s in first ladder place followed by Demons. Rats trail first place by nearly 20 points but do have the depth to bounce back in the second half of the campaign. In the women’s B-grade games, Rats secured a great win over B52’s, now the second-placed team on equal points after their 9-5 victory. Milla Penberthy played exceptionally well, scoring three goals. In the women’s C-grade match-ups, B52’s lost out in a thrilling game against Serpents Blue, with Sarah Kenyon’s six-goal haul leading to a 14-3 victory. Serpents Green lost to Rats Orange 10-2 and Rats Black finished the first half of the season on top of the ladder after their 10-5 win over Demons Black. The men’s C-grade games saw Demons beat Rats 12-5, while Rats fared even worse against the B52’s, losing 14-4.
