Geraldton Yacht Club has been rewarded for its persistence in maintaining improvements to club facilities to benefit members after establishing a second boat storage unit. Clubs WA’s Industry Awards for Excellence event saw Geraldton Yacht Club awarded the club development award, recognising improvement to club facilities and services for the benefit of members. Its most recent upgrade was a storage unit completed in March after the club’s consistent growth in numbers over the years. Due to the rapid growth of sailors, an additional boat storage facility was necessary. In the past, the club’s storage was jointly shared with Geraldton Districts Offshore Fishing Club which restricted operation and growth. GYC received $46,904 towards the construction of the additional storage space in July 2021. There were also three vessels left outside without space to house. Since expanding the storage unit, there’s been a 25 per cent increase to boat shed and courtyard rigging spaces, creating a more user-friendly space. The club was also recognised for its efforts to move to an online booking system, allowing event planners to book the facility with ease. The club development award for small to medium clubs was awarded to GYC, Lesmurdie Club and Port Kennedy Soccer Club. GYC commodore John Gummery said he was impressed with the number of new and old members who had joined for this year’s season. “I’m particularly excited about the number of young people — and adults — who want to take up sailing,” he said. He said the award was a wonderful achievement and acknowledgement of the hard-working management committee. “To all those people on the management committee well done, that recognition is well deserved,” he said.
