Geraldton’s Batavia Coast Marina stage two set to start construction following Development WA announcement
Construction on stage two of the Batavia Coast Marina project is set to begin, with the Station Square set for development.
Announced last week, Development WA announced works on the next stage of the project had begun, and would run until October.
According to the organisation, stage two of the project aimed to turn six hectares of vacant land in the CBD into a residential, commercial and retail hub.
It follows stage one, which in 2000 saw the foreshore redeveloped to include a number of residential and commercial lots, including the Geraldton Museum.
The next stage, which was green-lit by the State Government earlier this year, involves creating Monument Promenade and Chambers Way, with roads, footpaths, and lighting among the inclusions.
Development WA said up to 40 new homes could be built as a result.
City of Greater Geraldton deputy mayor Natasha Colliver said it was pleasing to see the development progress.
“BCM2 will be an important precinct for our city and it is fantastic to see this next stage of the development proceeding,” she said.
“The proposed roads will de-constrain the area and enable developers to transform the land adding vibrancy as well as housing and commercial opportunities.”
When asked if commuters would see issues with parking, given the site is a popular one for people in the CBD, Ms Colliver said the long term was the focus.
“Although there may be some disruption to commuters during this phase of construction the long term benefits of this development outweigh any short term inconveniences,” she said.
On Friday, cars were seen parked on the land, with the area yet to be fenced off.
Meanwhile, Geraldton MLA Kirrilee Warr said the housing would be a much-needed boost for the area, and she had been a supporter of the project having been a member of the Mid West Development Commission and the Batavia Coast Marina Steering Group.
