Geraldton’s Champion Bay Senior High School student Lilly Moses named WA runner-up in 2024 Simpson Prize

A student from Geraldton’s Champion Bay Senior High School has been named the WA runner-up in a prestigious essay writing competition, scoring a trip to the nation’s capital. Lilly Moses was one of two students selected from each State and territory for the 2024 Simpson Prize, which is an Australia-wide competition for year 9 and 10 students focusing on Australia’s service during World Wars I and II. Students had to write an essay with multiple sources in response to the statement “Commemoration of the Anzac tradition has widespread support in Australia despite different historical interpretations and debates about the nature and significance of the Anzac legend”. Lilly was picked from more than 1000 entries from 79 schools across the country. WA Senator Glenn Sterle said Lilly was a deserving recipient and an excellent ambassador for Geraldton. “Lilly provided a well-researched and considered response,” he said. “Lilly was in Canberra last week to attend the 2024 Simpson Prize presentation ceremony and take part in a three-day program, participating in events at Government House, the Australian War Memorial and other important cultural institutions.” Submissions for next year’s Simpson Prize are open until November. Mr Sterle said the award was an important tool for school students learning about history and Australia’s involvement in war.
