Geraldton’s Citizen Awards winners humbled to be recognised for their efforts in giving back to the community

Volunteers were honoured for their notable efforts and time giving back to their community in the Citizen Awards announced on Australia Day, with finalists and winners highlighting a well-rounded year of achievement. Twenty-six local heroes stood on stage at the Australia Day celebrations at Stow Gardens on Thursday and were applauded for their dedication to many facets in the community. Each nominee was recognised with an award, but four category winners were singled out. Community citizen of the year was awarded to Nicholas Austin, recognised for his outreach program Skate-Donate, collecting old skateboard parts to give to disadvantaged youth, while his Infinity Skate program offers a safe place for active children at the park. Non-competitive, volunteer-organised Marina parkrun was recognised in the active category. Young citizen of the year Hannah Miles, 14, said caring for the environment was a top priority and she was grateful to be acknowledged. “Not very many people care that much,” she said. “People do try to make things that are recycled but they do price it up pretty high so people can’t afford it. “It would be nice if I could try and make something that is affordable that will also help at the same time.” Hannah said she was a “massive” animal lover and felt obligated to help protect wildlife. “I just feel bad that they’re dying, I guess,” she said. Karen Giles, who has donated more than 550 baby bundles, was recognised as the senior community citizen of the year. Ms Giles said although she was pleased to win the award, she didn’t need the recognition to continue volunteering. “I love what I do, I make baby bundles and gift them to every baby born in Geraldton,” she said. “I’ve made 875 in two years.” Ms Giles said she would be busy this year making more bundles and being a nanny for her famil,y as she looks after a 10-week-old, with twins expected in March. “I want to thank my volunteers — without my volunteers I couldn’t do this,” she said. “My washing lady, my cellophane fairy lady, knitters, crocheters and the mums that donate to me — it’s just wonderful.”
